I’m back!!  Happy New Year folks, I hope you all had a great Christmas season!  I have had a chilled start to the New Year, but I was happy to be back in the pit and behind the lens again last night.  In a wet and windy London, I headed down to Shepherds Bush Empire to photograph Ron Pope for The Upcoming.  While I unfortunately missed the first act, I did get there in time to catch Michael Grubbs, front man of his band Wakey!Wakey!, who last night was flying solo!

Wandering onstage early, he captured the crowds attention immediately, talking with the crowd, explaining his songs and generally being cool!  I’d like to see him with his full band, so I hope he comes back!

I admit, I hadn’t heard of Ron Pope until I was asked to photograph him.  So as always, I did a little research and headed over to YouTube to check out his music.  What I listened to was nothing like what I heard live!

The song I heard, I don’t remember which it was, was slow, mellow and wouldn’t make for exciting photos.  Ron bounced out onto the stage, and the first 3 songs were full of energy.  I really enjoyed photographing the set!  The first, he was alone at the mic and the next 2 he picked up his guitar.

He has a great voice, and if I hadn’t had to get home to get the photos to the editor, I would have liked to stay and watch for a little.  Rumour backstage was that halfway through his set he was gonna wander into the crowd.  Unfortunately I don’t know if that happened or not!

You can check out the full set of photos either on my Facebook page or on my Flickr page.  All in all, I’m really happy with my first gig of 2014.  Here’s to many more!!
